Classic Fish Pie Recipe

A comforting, creamy fish pie that’s simple to prepare and always satisfying — perfect for a family meal or cosy evening in.

Ingredients
  

  • 700 g mixed fish diced and boneless
  • 625 ml milk
  • ½ onion
  • 100 g butter
  • 50 g plain flour
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 900 g mashed potatoes
  • 25 g mature cheddar cheese grated

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (Gas Mark 6).
  2. Poach the fish
  3. Place the milk and onion in a large saucepan and bring to a gentle boil.
  4. Reduce the heat, add the diced fish, and simmer gently for 4–5 minutes, until just cooked through.
  5. Using a slotted spoon, remove the fish and set aside in a large bowl. keep the milk for the sauce.
  6. On a medium heat gradually add your butter into the milk until fully melted. Then gradually add in your flour, stirring constantly until smooth. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 3–4 minutes, or until the sauce thickens. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  7. Spoon the fish mixture into a 1.5-litre ovenproof dish, spread evenly.
  8. Top with mashed potatoes, spreading smoothly to the edges. Sprinkle the grated cheddar evenly over the surface.
  9. Bake
  10. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the pie is piping hot and the top is golden brown.
